FINALLY BEING CARTED home after a rough session trying out the SIG Saur pistols, weapons that he didnât like at all, Landon pondered the day. The deaths of the two children weighed on him. His deputies had done everything they could. The SAR team had done everything it could.
The children hadnât died because of his deputiesâ lack. Theyâd died because of a suspectedâstrongly suspectedâhallucinogen, namely PCP. Where theyâd gotten it was the standing question. Neither his deputies nor officers from the Northridge P.D. had found anything in the home. That meant the kids had gotten it somewhere else. But intense interviews with the mother indicated that the kids had been home all week, this corroborated by neighbors. It also was corroborated by the childrenâs online activities. Further, the only travels the family had undertaken, according to the carâs GPS, showed one trip to the grocery store and one trip to their pediatrician, both verified. That brought it back to the house, especially because Martin was immediately suspicious of the mom, a naturalized Latinx.
Landon didnât quite know how to deal with Martinâs suspicions, all based on ethnicity and surname, but the man had a valid point, considering the womanâs maiden nameâHernandez. It was the same name and heritage as the nineteen-year-old in custody in the Blackthorne case where PCP was also implicated in the two brothersâ blood panels and urinalyses.
âOli?â Landon asked.
âGo ahead,â said the smiling voice.
âDo you have a drug dog?â
The man cast a glance his way, the face turning serious. âNo. We donât train drug dogs. Bomb dogs, yes, but not drug dogs. Completely different permits needed, and itâs not something Iâve ever been exposed to. Iâd have to take a lot of training to even get the necessary permits to keep the drugs on premises. In Idaho, thatâs dicey even then.â
Landon had hoped. Those hopes now vanished.
âI think Jessieâs Sumi used to be certified as a drug dog,â the man said after a long silence. âThey donât forget, you know.â
Of course Jessie would have a drug dog. Why not?!
He shut his eyes. Pulled his hat off and rubbed at his fatigue. Put his hat back on. Another âaskâ of a woman he was pretty sure wouldnât want to cooperate. Not now. Not with two of her dogs almost having been killed.
Abruptly, Oli pulled into the left lane, his dogs rising and coming up close behind. Then he turned into the cross-median emergency vehicle turn-around.
âWhat are you doing?â
âDonât let your guys arrest me,â Oli said, and Landon chuckled. âYouâre safe. Iâm in the car.â
âThatâs what I figured.â
Oli turned onto the southbound side, and the dogs lay back down.
âWhere are we going?â
âBack to town.â
âDid we forget something?â
âYou need a drug dog. Jessieâs got a drug dog. Now, we need to convince her to let you use that drug dog.â
âAh â¦I donât think itâs quite fair to hit her with this when she almost lost two of her dogs to a possible drug-related incident.â
Oli laughed out loud. âNowâs the best time exactly because of that.
